It's like if you would have to ask Google or Apple for permission when you want to open a coffee shop or any other business and have to give them 30% of your profit.

App marketplaces must be a public good and under the surveillance of the public and not controlled by a few old chief executives of Google or Apple.

It’s like if Apple and Google went out and bought land and built a very desirable mall and you want to open up your business in their mall.
And the mall owner charged not only rent, but 30% of your store sales which could only be made through their proprietary payment system.

Sounds lucrative.

More like if, between them, they held almost all commercially-zoned land and then proceeded to run a landlording duopoly.
I think the parent analogy is better. The land outside Apple and Google isn’t illegal to build on, just less desirable.
