I haven't encountered highlighting issues in neovim, but the treesitter feature in the upcoming neovim 0.5 improves highlighting a lot. I tried kakoune out for a while but missed Vim's window management, had the same struggle fighting muscle memory that you describe, missed the ecosystem from Vim, and I think some of the criticisms of Kakoune here are also valid: https://github.com/noctuid/dotfiles/blob/master/emacs/editin....
