For current events, The Economist is great, IMHO. Other good publications: The New York Times, The Guardian, BBC. Maybe The Washington Post.

Quora has some good info but the quality probably varies a lot.

I recently came across a site called all sides.com, it shows news articles from the far left, left, center, right, and far right. Its rather interesting to just compare the headlines, let alone the articles.
