My first professional software job was writing a windows version of of self storage management software in the 90s. It was pre-internet so the last thing I was working on was using pcAnywhere to connect to a central location to upload the nightly changes in the database.

I also remember connecting to the gates was tricky.

You’d be surprised (or maybe not), that there’s still quite a bit of legacy software kicking around on stand alone desktops out there.

Most facilities have shifted to the cloud, but there is still the odd facility that runs everything locally and processes their monthly rent roll manually.

Gate and security system APIs are also much easier to work with now for sure.
