Then they would completely stop Firefox development in favor of Safari.

I'd be hoping they do something like Edge/Chromium and replace Webkit with Gecko along with everything else that's better in Firefox.

I had this same wish yesterday. I know it isn't the ideal scenario, but there are definitely some net positives that could come out of it in the form of keeping Mozilla's lights on for a long time to come and massive improvements to areas of Safari that (to me) are worse than competitors such as dev tools and extensions.
