The oars used in competitive rowing switched from wood to carbon fibre in the early 1980s. The Dreissigacker brothers sold their first pair of carbon oars in 1977, and AFAIK 1984 was the last Olympics where wooden oars were used. Even at the start, carbon oars were cheaper than wooden ones, possibly because of the shape of the material... |
