Pi-Zeros are subsidized at $5 for education. It's difficult to get any quantity. They are ~$20 in general quantities.

Where did you get this information? it's simply not true. I shipped a product using RPI0W for $5 a pop in large quantity.
Can you share your supplier? Everywhere I looked online limited you to quantity 1 at $5.
My last company (https://farm.bot) worked with a supplier called LDO Motors. I believe they are a partial supplier to Prusa 3D printers as well.
