Everyone seems to be overlooking the privacy issues here. The main problem for me would be that even after I delete my account on some website they will still keep all of my data for one year.

There is nothing stopping most businesses from doing that at the moment.

In Germany there is. (I don't know the situation in France, but them being in the EU it should not be too different.)

Thinking about it, in the UK there are laws against this as well. However in practice, I am not confident that such laws are really enforceable. Still, my original claim was probably overstated.
