Academia is not without its downsides. The road to tenure sucks and generally pays peanuts compared to industry. It's not for everyone. More importantly, those were just examples. Replace teaching with running a bookstore or tending to a community garden or living on a sailboat in the Med and all of a sudden, professorship isn't nearly as desirable. You can always find someone to teach after a long career in industry, no need to lock yourself into academia. :) |
