The returns diminish over time.

What you learn over those years is incredibly helpful, as it takes a lot of breadth/depth and time. But the rate at which you learn things goes down. Similar to learning a foreign language. At first you are learning new words everyday. At some point, you know all the common words, so learning new words is impossible at the same rate as before.
