I've often thought that maybe the reason we can't get a quantized theory of gravity is that it's too complicated for human brains rather than we need a bigger accelerator. You might be able to get somewhere with a brute force type approach of almost randomly coming up with equations for a theory and then trying to see if they make any sense and predict anything interesting.
