I think a big part of it is just culture and brand. If you go back and look at Kalanick's original "company values" [1] they included things like "toe-stepping", "hustlin", and "superpumped", while Airbnb tried to cultivate a friendlier culture (towards employees and users). Of course, you can still have a bad effect on the world even with a friendly culture, but I think it's safe to say Uber's culture led to a lot of more toxic behavior (towards drivers, competition, regulation, and ultimately employees).
