Granted, my PhD is in experimental physics, not theoretical. The story as I learned it was that QM is different because CM produced absurd answers for phenomena such as blackbody radiation, line spectra, and the photoelectric effect.

I wouldn't take seriously some random hack claiming physics ph.d.s don't know QM. Physics is defined by how physicists practice it.
Indeed, I think something that happens is that the weirdness and paradoxes of QM are what get reported and debated, with no mention that people are using routinely it to solve mundane problems with a high rate of success and accuracy.
