I think part of the problem (sociologically) is also sharp reluctance on part of funding agencies, and hiring committees. Graduate students are made to feel, in no uncertain terms, that working on quantum foundations equates to career suicide.

It’s like physicists (collectively) have PTSD from a few decades of trying to understand QM, which then crystallized into the maxim “shut up and calculate”. What we’re seeing is the resulting learned helplessness.

Thankfully quantum information has been a successful way to smuggle foundational research past funding committees.
If someone has a better way to reduce the mental load of reconciling all experimental data physicists will no doubt adopt it. Until then they are wise to mostly just muse about foundation as personal passtime rather than engage in ideological wars.
