I've personally found that sometimes using a tool like PlantUML[1] or others (lot DOT graphs) to sometimes be easier to create visualizations with. It seems to allow me to focus more on various pieces as the big picture is built. It also seems to provide a great way of ensuring various parties thinking is similar.
