One thing bosses are looking for in subordinates isn't necessarily excellence but understanding. Do I know what choice they'd make and would they make the same choice I would when confronted with the same problem. And the best way to figure that out is to get to know someone. A lot of my promotions have been good reviews but some have been grabbing beers with the boss. |

That will often mean "would make the same choice I would", but I'm happy if they merely use the same rubric.
