The other day I discovered https://favicon.cc, "in beta" since 2007. Instead of canvas it uses a html table for drawing (as well as the 1:1 preview!)

I mean, I slapped together a table-based image renderer back around '04—the result was bloated but iirc could be displayed in Links.

Opening that on my iPhone redirects through some weird file:// URI. Is that normal for sites with self signed certs?
