Auroville is open to everyone, but there are rules. In the visitor centre you can read that they claim to be religion-less. For example, religious cult (e.g. monotheist prayer) is forbidden in the Matrimandir, the central monument dedicated for the practice of yoga and meditation. However, the spiritual movement behind Auroville is a kind of cult of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo. But I found Auroville habitants much less proselyte than religious communities in general. Actually it is easier to be kicked out of the community than to become one of them. |
