In fact, the general take is that Americans have been pretty good at following distancing rules with or without hard rules but some were slow to do so (and most government was in retrospect slow to strongly recommend doing so) but, to a first approximation, few will do so over an extended period. Just because a majority of people do sensible things doesn't matter. The actions of the irresponsible and sociopathic minority still create the epidemic.
