The "S" in SNAP means that if you have income, you have to cover some of your food expenses. What's wrong with that? If you have no income/assets, you can get $600+/month for a family of 4.

There are logistical complications around ability to complete the red tape, and personal irresponsibility or access to low-cost options when spending the SNAP money, but big-picture SNAP is fine. Should people be entitled to spend all their post-tax income on luxuries and get welfare support for basic needs? That's a more extreme position than supplemental support for people with some wealth. |
