iirc Google Maps was initially not a success. MapQuest had a majority market share of online maps up until the release of the iPhone. So they floundered for about a year or two.

So you're saying Google Maps wasn't a huge success until Android?

... but totally in a non-monopolistic way, of course.

I'm saying that Google does sometimes stick with products that aren't doing well initially if they see the promise in it.
