People can get offended at one term or terms and be blind to the fact that they use others that are offensive to different people. It happens all the time that you use a slur casually and don't realize it applies to someone next to you. If a person is conscious of that happening daily where it's not socially acceptable to say anything, then they may internalize that this is normal and expect others to also have a "thick skin". |
