For exactly this reason. "Girls - these are your toys, you play with them. Boys, you seem to prefer these, you will play with these". Continual use of unnecessarily gendered language is a major factor in perpetuating these differences.

Lego have never claimed that "ordinary Lego" was for boys only. It was just the reality that girls tended to be less interested in it than boys. "Friends" and "Elves" are the result of extensive research into the differences in how girls and boys plays and why girls seemed to be less interested in traditional Lego.
