There's plenty of reasons for economic-abundance value that overlap with strategic military-security spending: strengthening one's stance against bad actors like China and their allies, redirecting and/or mining asteroids for their resources, etc.. Whether Space Force's overt mission is currently aligned with intergalactic safety - certainly Elon Musk is aware and will effort towards protecting and managing for such potential events.

Yes, it actually already existed as a branch of the air force. Why do you think it is called "Space Force"? Because it was originally the Air Force Space Command and is dated back to 1982.
