from the CNN article: One possibility being considered is that an Iranian missile unit saw something on their radar, thought they were under attack and fired.

This is one danger of brinksmanship, which is that people's fingers are hovering a little too close to the trigger. If that is indeed what happened here, we can only hope that the powers that be realize that their saber-rattling was a cause of these deaths.

Exactly. It reminds me not only of the Ukrainian airliner shot down by Russian-backed forces in 2014 but also of the Iranian Airlines jet shot down by the USS Vincennes in 1988. So tragic.

That is not what OP proposed, please comment in good faith and avoid strawmen
You're the one who's assuming bad faith.

The OP talked about brinkmanship and how having ones forces on edge can lead to these disasters. I pointed to two other perfectly relevant examples that support his/her comment.

One of the examples just happens to be the US shooting down of an Iranian airliner, which is notable for obvious reasons, but was not intended as some kind of "justification" or other such silliness. I provided the link since younger readers might not be familiar with it (unlike the 2014 incident).

I'm Canadian. My country lost 63 citizens. Another 75 of the victims were residents. 138 souls. So, despite what you assumed, I have no agenda other than learning more about how these things can happen. As of this moment, our Prime Minister is giving a news conference indicating he believes it was indeed an (accidental) missile strike.

I think you replied to the wrong comment.
The comment he meant to reply to seems to have been removed. It was something like "would you rather we let Iran kill Americans" or some BS like that.
> the powers that be

So Khamenei and Trump.

I wouldn't count on it.
