I joined a FAANG company when I was about 40 years old around just a couple of years ago coming from a sequence of startups and smaller companies. I think the biggest adjustment to make is the performance review systems. At these big companies performance is not about doing right things, but about fitting in with insular expectations. The senior folks who you would hope could mentor you may have no idea that you don't "get it" or what kind of feedback it requires to make the transition. In contrast, a lot of feedback you get at smaller companies is to just focus on doing right things for the business and not worry about any defined expectations. I have seen some people make the transition smoothly... others not so much. |
