Software in the 80s was: extremely low throughput but excellent latency.

We could really do better on the latter category here in the 21st century.

Part of that was the widespread use low-resolution, high refresh rate, zero-latency (CRT) monitors, and the use of hardware interrupts instead of a serial bus for input.
