It’s truly bizarre. Think a lot of it comes from people being influenced by YouTube , and rgb lights being one of those things that really only exists to appear on video.

To be fair, some of us were sticking case windows and cold cathode lights into our gaming PCs 20 years ago so we could look uber-1337 at LAN parties.

(I am now firmly in the "RGB is dumb" camp like the other grumpy old people. Oh well.)
