CS has expanded so much that unless you are a genius you can't really know it all, so corners have to be cut. Depending on where you position yourself in the stack, deep understanding of hardware may or may not be important. As for algorithms: for most of the stuff what people really need is to have a basic grasp of complexity of the common containers and time accesses to various parts of the system but beyond that–just learn on the go. |
