For those wondering what this is about before jumping into the PDF. It is an article from the captain's perspective of a flight in 1977, where a Lockheed L-1011's left elevator jammed (corrosion) during take-off forcing the plane to pitch up. The captain, Capt. Jack McMahan, was awarded the FAA's Distinguished Service Award for successfully landing the plane by using a thrust differential between the wing engines and tail engine to counteract the upward pitch, preventing a stall.
