My understanding is that he's working from home? I dont really see how this could work out if you are not working from home and your partner works as well. A simple example would be that you wake up at five, go to work at 8 and then come back at six or seven. Your partner wakes up at 8, goes to work and comes back at six or seven. You are dead tired by eight and want to go to bed at nine. I personally cant go to bed before 12 or 1 as I work long days and I feel that I have 'wasted' the day if I dont spend some time for things I enjoy (be it hacking or gaming or something else).

I am working from home, but when I started the 5am thing, I was freelancing for a company in the city center. So I was going to their office every day (for about 6 months). And it was still great. My gf finishes her work at 5 and is at home around 5.30pm or 6pm, so yes our schedules works quite well with this lifestyle.
