Where did this dark mode craze come from?

Don't get me wrong - I quite enjoy dark mode most of the time, but why now and not earlier?

To speculate, screens are progressing to display dark mode well. I get eye strain from Jetbrains Pycharm dark theme, the terrible way it renders on my laptop, so I am holding out now. Holo theme for Android may have accelerated the trend from 2012.

I feel like it leaked from developer software engineering culture into the mainstream. Dark mode on text editors has been a thing for a long time,

I’m guessing a few people finally decided to do it in other places.
