Without getting political about this issue, I have a question.

I imagine the reason you're carrying is for self defence, say in the case of an active shooter for example.

Let's say you're able to take down the shooter. During the fiasco that ensures, wouldn't you be afraid of being mistaken as the active shooter by the police? It seems generally they're pretty trigger-happy..

(Again, not to start a political thread about this, I'm just simply curious, coming from a country where we can't carry guns.)

In most of the recent cases I've seen, a citizen with a concealed carry was either involved or in the direct area as the event took place. Far before any police (unless they were also on sight) could arrive. By that time, hopefully the situation is disarmed and the police arrive to sort out the details. If I were in that situation, (God willing I never am) I would only draw my weapon if there were no police officers present.
It also escalates the situation from one where an individual was just using the gun as a show of force but didn't intend to use it, to one where guns are now being discharged in a high stress and crowded environment. The vast majority of "using" a gun by criminals is just brandishing the gun to scare other people.
