I'd mention one thing which I think no one has mentioned so far.

Today we've more freedom than ever, more access to people and more prosperity than ever.

This creates a dynamic were people cluster according to their outlook. No one accepts a "downer" in a happy group.

I'd say more happy, more prosperous country, a country which has more freedom will see higher sucide rates due to loneliness.

I wouldn't be surprised if the examples of this like Scandinavian countries have higher sucide rate if not highest.

I'd be lot better being a "sad" person with other sad people than being the only sad person among all other happy people.
