Most (major) train lines have fiber buried next to them that is leased by the various telecoms which helped the expansion. Yes indeed. Most people don't know that. Here's a little piece of related trivia: Long before wireless was a thing, people wanted to bypass the AT&T long distance voice telecom monopoly. Actually, long before voice communications were a thing, people wanted to send telegrams. Hmmm ... as you note, there are train lines all over. Perfect for right of way to run telegraph wires, and eventually to run long distance fiber.
