Sometimes a founding CTO needs to hire both an Architect and a VP of Engineering.

The trick of course is defining what the remaining duties are that fall up to the CTO. Specifically, making them desirable to that founder. Chief prototyper, evangelist, and vision-setter might be a good mix.
