On the other end of the spectrum, compared to raw technical challenge, is building something (esp an application) that actually has users. We as craftspeople tend to overfocus on raw technical challenges and technical superiority, and we lose sight that the purpose of our tools and expertise is to create things. Creating things that other people find fun or useful is even farther out of most of our comfort zones. And it puts a lot of things into perspective, like how unimportant technical superiority is when picking among trade-offs when you're actually trying to get things done that isn't just a self-inflicted technical puzzle that will die on localhost. |
