I've been doing this for about 20 years now, and I solved the problem through "hobby programming". I've been doing a bunch of AI stuff the last couple of years that has nothing to do with my job or my company. I did it out of pure interest in AI. Then I started speaking about what I was learning at conferences [0]. Yeah, it's tough to squeeze in hobby programming with two toddlers and company to run, but it's the only thing that keeps me interested. Also, I involve the kids in it (you'll see that the kids help me with my experiments as test subjects and assistants if you watch the video).
