In the best case, it would look like they're trying to tastelessly profit from the problem - eg an ad for Suboxone. Psychological manipulation does not require persistent personalized targeting, it just helps. Base consumerism is driven by contrasting a horrible hyperreality with stability/escape - the context of the ad must be different from the context of the story. |
