Because they didn't want you to plug in the lightning cable and just use it as a wired mouse ... because that defeats the purpose of it.

I mean, I plug mine in once in a blue moon ... and always when I leave the office for the night ... and it's fully charged for many weeks thereafter.

You might have more of a point if the battery only lasted a few hours ...
