There's a wide gap between fake information and real information.

On Via rail (Canada's Amtrack) you can see that 'there's only 3 seats left' in that category, but in my experience I think it's legit information.

Frankly - it's kind of useful as I sometimes delay booking, but I know the cheap tickets will be sold at some point.

Maybe there are some question marks about the 'darkness' of that pattern, but it's different than those sites that categorically lie or misrepresent.

I suggest if airlines/hotels are outright lying about some kinds of information, they should face fines, legislation, regulation.
