I believe it has a lot to do with history. You can pick a stack that costs money or a stack that is free. .NET might be great but is it so much better than the free alternatives? It’s a hard sell. As others have noted, it sounds like it might truly be free now, however Microsoft has always made me nervous with “embrace extend extinguish”[1]. Also I just love using Linux for my servers.
