In the end, you can probably get away with keeping your car clean by making it your thing. "No food, sit quietly in this car!" It's not a battle I'd choose to fight with my kids, but to each their own. It would be even harder with a couch, or other furniture that lives in your home.

In the car only water and dry food, is not that onerous a rule.
I remain shocked at how many people eat in their cars, especially messy or aromatic Foods. I love in ‘n out, but I sure as heck don’t want the inside of my car to smell like it.
Me too. What am I supposed to do about it, divorce my wife or take away her car keys? This is not a battle I can win without major collateral damage.

My car is nasty. The seats are brown with aftermarket goo. This is how it is when you must cooperate and compromise with other people.

This is a strong argument for a second car, which would be much cheaper than a divorce.
Some of us like our spouses enough to be in the same car with them on trips...

Not to mention that avoiding trash hardly seems like "a strong argument for a second car."

What a strange thing to get angry at me for.
