I wonder, how low could we get latency if network providers put as much effort into reducing lag as they do increasing bandwidth?

In the US, for those of us who are fortunate enough to have proper fiber, latency is regularly near speed of light, at least in my experience.

Afaik (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the latency overhead with non-fiber (e.g. cable) mostly comes from analog signal processing.
