I think this is a good idea. I've wanted something similar to this at my university, almost like a hacker space, where students could program and work on non school related projects together.

A HackerSpace @ Uni is a great idea! What do you think Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, CALTECH, UCSD are? Also a good idea to look at www.olin.edu.
