Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. If you're into Mieville you'll probably dig it; I think Perdido Street Station in particular owes a lot to Wolfe. It's hard to pitch the series (4 books, but currently published in two volumes) without giving anything away, and part of the pleasure of the book is piecing together information as you go.
