I started programming in 1989 and I still don't know exactly how to approach understanding big existing codebases in a productive way. I am pretty well career wise, though. So, don't worry too much about that point.

I also hate meetings from the bottom of my heart. Maybe that's why you find it hard to pay attention?

Like with the big codebases point, I have a taste for small and simple, so when I start plunging in a big codebase, I have too much moments when I get nervous by how stuff was badly done and that emotional state does not help me focus on the task.
