The fact that Ostrom's work isn't better known is one of the tragedies of our times. It's as though people heard of tragedy of the commons, decided it excused bad behavior or apathy, and refused to hear how the tragedy of the commons is to be avoided. I will also add Le Guin's "A non-Euclidean view of California as a cold place to be" as the spiritual complement of Ostrom's mathematics and science. |
