Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius. It's the hardest pill I've ever tried to swallow in my life; in fact, I am still in the process of doing so. It goes over the mental process and ruminations of assuming the greatest commitment a human being can make: that which you make to reason and nature. Taking full responsibility of your existence is a daunting proposition, but initiating the process is a fruitful enterprise. Just a warning, though: be prepared for thanatophobia while reading it, since it has "memento mori" written all over it. |
