Besides Premji, who is mentioned in the article, the Tatas have several charitable efforts[1,2] on top of their known (past?) involvement in setting up institutions of higher education like TISS and, I think, IISC. I haven’t had a chance to research this, but I suspect other Indian companies will have similar CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programmes — i.e. they are funnelling their charity through their businesses? Also many Indian businesses are “family run” (Premji is an exception I believe), so there’s some value in retaining ownership as it’s passed on to their children. |
